Why will water rates be increasing?

The need for a reliable and abundant water supply is critical to the current and future residents and businesses of Republic. To that end, the City engaged the engineering firm of Burns & McDonnell to develop a 20-Year Water Master Plan to identify nearly $100 million in capital investments in our water infrastructure necessary to achieve that overall water objective. Over the next several years, the City will focus on and continue to communicate several key improvement areas identified in the Plan, including two new wells and towers, replacing antiquated water mains, and upgrading water meters in our community to an automated system that can more quickly detect leaks and other issues.

By planning for critical capital, evaluating our performance, and proactively managing our water assets, we will create a sustainable, redundant, and sufficient water supply and distribution system for generations to come.

Capital Projects

New Water Tower & Well

Generously donated by Convoy of Hope, 1.5 acres of their property near James River Freeway and I-44 is marked for a new elevated storage tank and well, allowing for continued growth in the Brookline area and meeting required MDNR guidelines.  This project will be our top priority as we enter 2025. Our goal is to have the new tower fully operational as soon as possible. The City will also begin looking to secure a site for an additional water tower and well that will serve the south side of Republic and it’s growing population.  Estimated Project Cost: $15 Million

Replacing Antiquated Water Mains

In older parts of our city, 4" - 6" diameter water mains are common, with some fire hydrants dating back to the 1950s.  As water system requirements increase and technology improves over time, some parts are now obsolete and need to be upgraded.  In areas served by the antiquated mains and hydrants, firefighters must use adapters to connect the larger hose to the smaller outlets.  This adaptation reduces the amount of water available.  A standard is in place requiring each fire hydrant to provide a minimum flow of rate, ensuring adequate water supply to protect our residents.  It is crucial our neighborhoods have access to water at appropriate pressures during an emergency.
