Sport Overview

What is disc golf anyway? Disc golf is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreational activities in the country. Similar to golf, the object of disc golf is to complete each hole in as few throws (strokes in the traditional game) as possible. Instead of using golf clubs and a golf ball, disc golfers use a flying disc to traverse each hole by flying their disc from a teeing area to a disc-catching target. For the advanced player, there are different types of discs used for different purposes, much like traditional golfers use different clubs for various shots.

Disc golf is a sport for all to enjoy as it can be played from school age to golden age making it a terrific lifetime sport. One of the biggest attractions to the game, however, may be the fees required in order to play. It's free! Discs can be rented from the Republic Community Center, free of charge (photo identification exchange required).

Basic Rules of Disc Golf

Disc Golf: Object of the Game

The object of the game is to play each hole with the fewest throws (strokes) possible. The player with the lowest total strokes for the course wins.

Safety First

In order for this disc golf course to be successful, everyone must do their part to keep it safe. All trail and park users have the right away! Do not throw a disc until the path is completely clear. Be courteous and have fun!

General

Disc golf is played like traditional golf, but utilizes a throwing disc. One stroke is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is occurred. The object is to acquire the lowest score.

Tee Throws

Tee throws must be completed within the designated tee area. Stepping outside of the designated tee area once the disc is released is acceptable. Do not throw until the players in front of you are out of range.

Throwing Order

After teeing off, the player whose disc is farthest from the hole always throws first. The player with the least amount of throws on the previous hole is the first to tee off on the next hole.

Fairway Throws

Fairway throws must be made with the foot closest to the hole on the lie. The other foot may be no closer to the hole than the lie. A run-up and normal follow-through, after release, is allowed.

Completion of Hole

A disc that comes to rest in the basket or chains constitutes successful completion of that hole.

Unplayable Lie

A disc that comes to rest more than 2 meters above the ground is considered unplayable. The disc must be thrown from the lie on the ground, directly underneath the unplayable lie. Add 1 stroke penalty.

Out-of-bounds

A throw that lands out of bounds must be played from a point 3 feet in bounds from where the disc went out of bounds. Permanent water hazards, walking trails and public roads are always out of bounds.
